Are you thinking of moving to Limassol, Cyprus?

Are you thinking of moving to Limassol, Cyprus? Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus, located on the southern coast of the island. With a rich vibrant atmosphere, there is much to see and do. For those of you looking for an apartment to rent in Limassol, we have put together a low down on the local area.

The History

Limassol was established between the ancient cities of Amathus and Kourion. During the Byzantine rule, Limassol was originally known as Neapolis (which literally translates as new town). Limassol was more than likely built after the city of Amathus had been destroyed by King Richard the Lionheart in 1191. The cities inhabitants were transferred to Lemesos soon after.

Limassol Medieval Castle is located in the old town, overlooking the old harbour. It's not known exactly then the fortress was built, but according to Etienne de Lusignan it was constructed in 1193 by Guy de Lusignan. What you see at the Limassol Medieval Castle is only a fragment of what may have been a larger castle as it bore the brunt of many attacks from invaders, as well as damage inflicted from earthquakes. The Ottoman Empire rebuilt the fort as we see it in 1590. Today, it is home to the Medieval Museum of Cyprus. The museum offers you a glimpse of what life was really like for the inhabitants in medieval Limassol.

Places To Go

Of course, we can't talk about Limassol without mentioning the famous promenade along the sea front! Taking a nice leisurely stroll along the promenade is always recommended. Situated along the stretch of the coast, this promenade-turned-park is abundant with palm trees, water features and stunning sea views. Speaking of parks, the Municipal Park is located in the city centre. Surrounded with trees and greenery, the Municipal Park is also home to a rose garden, the Limassol Zoo and an open theatre which is home to many events.

The real charm lies in Limassol's old town, with its traditional cobbled streets, bustling marketplaces, boutique shops and rustic sandstone buildings.
